4th Grade
What do we learn in 4th grade:
In fourth grade, we are celebrating all we have learned in elementary school and building on that learning to prepare for middle school! Here are some of the skills students acquire in fourth grade:
We understand and interpret figurative language, and comprehend literary and informational texts.
Write cohesive paragraphs, use correct grammar, and apply punctuation rules, including commas and quotation marks. Understand and apply word roots, prefixes, and suffixes to understand word meanings.
Solve multi-step word problems using whole numbers and the four operations. Use place value to round multi-digit whole numbers. Use fractions and understand the relationship between factors and multiples, and identify prime and composite numbers. Study the structures and functions of living organisms and how they interact in ecosystems. Investigate Earth's systems, including its materials and processes, and understand the role of water. Ask questions and use the five senses to gather information and make scientific findings. Explore early American History through the Civil War era.
Students also learn more personal responsibility and independence as they move through four different core-content classrooms throughout the day. We love to see our students blossom into growing, thriving, well-adjusted adolescents as they transition to their next phase of education.
Mrs. Trish Gernt loves teaching 4th grade at CES. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary
Education and a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She wants her students to feel safe,
confident, and happy in her classroom. She is married to Mr. Tom Gernt and has two grown children and three dogs. She loves coffee and chocolate.
Mrs. Katie Knox teaches Reading and Writing and loves to help students discover a new favorite book. Prior to joining the 4th-grade team last year, Mrs. Katie was a 5th-grade ELA teacher at CES. She previously taught 4th grade at Sunbright School, RTI at Central Middle School, and grades 6-8 Social Studies at Norwood Middle School. She is married to Zandy and is mom to Elsie and Steven. She and her family love to spend time hiking together and serving their community through First Baptist Church in Wartburg. Some of her favorite things are coffee, chocolate, and working in her flower beds.
